Munich as Seen by Travel Enthusiasts
On the way to India, Travel Enthusiasts from the blog Voyages à Deux are traveling across Europe by bus and sharing great tips, advice, and tricks through their articles!
Fifth stop: Munich.
Ah Munich… what an adventure! The Bavarian capital welcomed us with open arms, loaded with pretzels and beer mugs for Oktoberfest.
But beyond this huge festival (which we highly recommend experiencing at least once in your life!), Munich has many secrets to discover. Shall we take you along?
Marienplatz

We start our visit to Munich at its heart, its incredible square where you can go at 5 PM to admire the little story that animates the town hall’s carillon. More impressive than the Grand Place in Brussels, you can really feel the pulse of the city here.
Nymphenburg Palace
The summer residence of the Bavarian princes remains our favorite visit in Munich, particularly for its incredible gardens but also for its magnificent rooms, all with breathtaking high ceilings and crystal chandeliers.
The Munich Residence
Less impressive than Nymphenburg Palace, the Munich Residence is still well worth a visit for its incredible collection of perfectly preserved Baroque rooms. A labyrinthine path transports us to the flamboyant era of the Bavarian princes. A must for history enthusiasts.
Englischer Garten
Larger than New York’s Central Park, this garden is one of our favorite spots in Munich because in addition to wandering in the greenery, you can also enjoy Bavarian specialties in a friendly atmosphere without breaking the bank! Don’t hesitate to check out the “beer garden” where you can share a mass (one liter!) of beer while listening to the typical orchestra.
The Munich Wave
Who would have thought that Munich was a city adored by surfers? Not us, for sure! But that was before discovering the artificial wave created in the small river that flows through the heart of the Englischer Garten. You can watch surfers from all over the world practicing their moves under the amazed eyes of passersby.
The Beaches of Munich
There are those who surf, and there are those who sunbathe. And what better way to enjoy the Indian summer in September than to lounge on the small beaches along the Rhine? We resisted the temptation, but we recommend you give in!
Haus der Kunst Museum

At first glance, this enormous building with its massive and somewhat cold architecture does not really inspire the desire to enter. Yet, it houses very beautiful collections of modern art that would be a shame to miss. Especially in the basement, where a video exhibition intrigues as much as it fascinates…
St. Peter’s Cathedral
It is primarily for the view from its belfry that this beautiful cathedral in the heart of Munich is worth a visit. From up there, you can get a breathtaking panorama of the entire city, from Marienplatz to the Olympic Stadium. But hold on tight, the stairs to climb are quite steep!
The Maximilian Forum
An unusual art space that we stumbled upon, the Maximilian Forum is strange, intriguing, and a bit daring at the same time. It reinterprets modern art and creates a unique space that you wouldn’t want to stay in at night but is worth the visit during the day.
The Old Hofbräuhaus Brewery
If you don’t have the chance to discover Munich during Oktoberfest, you can still party while drinking beer in a typically Bavarian atmosphere at the historic Hofbräuhaus brewery. A bit touristy, it’s still worth a visit!
Our Great Addresses
Where to Enjoy?
Apart from the beer garden in the English Garden, which offers great Bavarian specialties at low prices, be sure to try the delicious Weisswurst at the charming Turm Stüberl. Located at the top of the small museum dedicated to Valentin Karlstadt (the German Charlie Chaplin), it provides a lovely place to have lunch with a view of one of the oldest gates in Munich.
Some Culinary Specialties

Apart from beer, you must not miss the pretzels, pork knuckle (to enjoy like Obelix!), or the sausages, of course! White ones, with their little lemony flavor, or grilled, there’s something for everyone.
Practical Information
The buses from Links12 arrive right in the center of Munich, a stone’s throw from the train station and Marienplatz. Coming from Milan, the bus arrives very late (around 2 or 3 AM!), but the streets are safe, and you can easily find a taxi.
To explore the city, we recommend stopping by the tourist office located at Marienplatz, where you can find all the necessary information, a discount card for museum access, and purchase passes for public transport.
