Third stop: MILAN.

Milan is one of the Fashion capitals, and fashionistas will undoubtedly feel like they are in paradise there. For others, it would be quite a shame to miss out on the most famous city in Lombardy. We only had one small day there, and while two days would have been more comfortable, we can already assure you that Milan has many other beautiful things to offer. Let’s start the visit:

The Milan Cathedral

The stunning Milan Cathedral

It is certainly one of the most beautiful churches in Italy. The exterior is truly splendid and full of details. If its dome is less impressive than that of the Florence Cathedral, the rest of the monument is significantly more enjoyable. Don’t miss the crypt; if it is often crowded, it is precisely because it is worth the detour.

The Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II

The Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II

When you are facing the Cathedral, the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II is right to your left. You can’t miss it with its grand entrance arch that effectively highlights the architecture of this plaza, the main one in Milan.

Inside, there are some cozy establishments to enjoy a drink or even have a meal in a charming setting for those on a budget. As for luxury boutiques, while they may not be in your expense plan, nothing prevents you from appreciating their displays!

The Sforza Castle

The Sforza Castle

This impressive fortress in the middle of the city is quite a surprising monument. You can stroll freely inside its grounds since only the museum visits are paid. The entrance is not too expensive, so if you are passionate about archaeology, prehistory, or Egyptian antiquity, this is not the time to hesitate: treat yourself!

Sempione Park

Sempione Park

Sempione Park is located just above the Sforza Castle. It offers a pleasant green stroll just steps from the center of Milan. While not very large compared to other parks in similarly sized cities, Sempione Park is well-designed. You will come across artwork scattered throughout the green spaces, as well as beautiful spots to sunbathe and, of course, shady areas to refresh yourself.

San Bernardino Alle Ossa Church

San Bernardino Alle Ossa

This small church, located off the more touristy paths, is a true curiosity that deserves some attention. While the church itself is quite modest, one of the rooms is covered with bones, some arranged in remarkable cross patterns. This could rival the Catacombs of Paris!

The Brera District

The historic district of Milan, the Brera area is worth losing yourself in for a while. You will enjoy the architecture of some of the most interesting buildings in the city. This lively and warm neighborhood will perhaps provide an opportunity to sip a coffee while taking the pulse of the city, or it might inspire a cultural outing to its art gallery.

The Velasca Tower

The Velasca Tower

The Velasca Tower is one of the symbols of the city. Once you pass its surprising architecture, there’s no need to linger. Whether you love it or not, the Velasca Tower remains a must-see in Milan, and staying in the city without even glancing at it would be a bit like coming to Paris and not seeing the Eiffel Tower. Can you imagine? We can’t.

The Monumental Cemetery

Since there are cemetery enthusiasts, we cannot fail to recommend the impressive cemetery in Milan. Its name, the Monumental Cemetery, is not for nothing. For others, a detour is still worth it if you have a bit of margin in your schedule. Joking aside, it may be the ideal place to kill time.

A Bit of Culture

Milan offers a nice little selection of quite diverse museums. If we particularly recommend the Poldi Pezzoli Museum and the Bagatti Valsecchi Museum, it’s simply because they align better with our tastes. There is no doubt that you will easily find something to satisfy yours in a city like Milan.

Our Favorite Addresses

Where to Sleep?

Adi Doria Grand Hotel

The Adi Doria Grand Hotel, very close to the central station, offers an ideal base if you are not staying long in the city or if you have planned to catch a train. As classy as it is willingly “old-fashioned,” this character hotel has much more to offer than its rather ordinary facade. Besides the very good breakfast (included), the restaurant offers attractive prices for quality dishes, and the bar regularly organizes jazz nights. A little splurge in your budget that you won’t regret!

Where to Indulge?

Eating in Milan

In Venice, we recommended dishes that pay homage to seafood. In Milan, why not simply let yourself be tempted by a pizza? And to change things a bit from the classics, we suggest, not far from the central station once more, the gigantic slices from Gaffurio. Whether you choose the “normal” version or the “abundant” version, in any case, you should not leave hungry.

Some Culinary Specialties

As often in Italy, pizza, of course, and ice cream, which can be found almost everywhere for next to nothing, but to make it more typical, we highly recommend trying the Milanese cutlet or the wonderful saffron risotto!
