Discover Prizren: Kosovo’s Hidden Gem

Hello dear readers,

Today, I would like to talk about what I believe is the most beautiful city in Kosovo: Prizren. Prizren is a beautiful place located in the southwest of the Republic of Kosovo, where you can find Turkish works everywhere.

I traveled to Prizren by car from Priština. This journey takes about 50 minutes. During the trip, you can see the natural beauty of Kosovo around you. The highway is much nicer than many other countries’ highways and is provided to people free of charge.

I have read that approximately 300,000 people live in Prizren. I noticed that many of the people here speak Turkish. In a city where Albanians are predominant, you can first try speaking in Turkish. The city, located right at the foot of the Šar Mountains, seems to be designed with the atmosphere of an Anatolian town. If you have been to Amasya or Tokat before, you will feel as if you have visited a smaller version of those places.

In the city, where the Bistrica River flows through the middle, you will want to take many photos at various points.

Let’s start describing the city. Below is a city map showing the important places of Prizren. The sites worth visiting in Prizren are certainly not limited to this, as there are many other places that tourists might want to explore. However, if you want to see the city center within three hours, I think the tourist sites listed below will interest you.

Let’s start with the prayer house located in the northwest of the city. This is an open-air mosque. Recently restored by the Turkish military, this mosque, while not currently in use for worship, provides a beautiful sight.

The view of the city from the top is very pleasant. I definitely recommend it.

To take the above photo, you must climb to the Saviour Church. Below, you can see an image of this church.

In the city center, many artworks dating back to the Ottoman era are scattered around. One of them is the Halveti Lodge. To reach here, you need to walk north from the river along the narrow cobbled streets. This structure, which has been around for over 350 years, shares the same courtyard with the Saraçhane Mosque.

I think an important structure in Prizren is the Sinan Pasha Mosque. Built by Sinan Pasha in the 17th century, this mosque is quite magnificent. You can enjoy watching the mosque while sipping something at the cafes beside it.

Throughout the city, there are many baths, complexes, and numerous artifacts reminiscent of Anatolian towns.

On the way to the Sinan Pasha Mosque, you will be greeted by a Stone Bridge. I think this might be the most popular tourist spot in Prizren.

The city square is known as the Şadırvan Square. Here, there is indeed a medium-sized fountain, and many shops are located around it.

This is all I have to share about this trip. If you ever find yourself in Kosovo, make sure to visit Prizren.
